im sorry but in north east where i live they still do it :-(
They do?
Blimey, they shouldn't! they could get shut down for that, and so could their supplier.

I'm pretty sure it's still acceptable here in the states, although I would cry if I saw it. But on a positive note that is what got me into fishkeeping as a kiddo, along with many others on this site according to all of the "what got you into fishkeeping?" threads.

When was it made illegal in the UK? I have seen it too. I even ended up with one that a friend's son won. I have now re-homed it to someone's pond :)

In many countries (Including the UK) it is illegal now.

It's not illegal - it was to be included in the new animal rights bill, but was scaled down to make it illegal to give them as prizes unless the child is accompanied by an over 16 year old.

Of course it's WRONG but has that ever seemed to stop people? I don't approve of it.

I agree, it's terribly wrong. Makes me want to scoop them all up and give them a good home.

I have a question though about bettas. I do not know very much about them. I see them in fish stores in tiny little containers. Even my doctors office has one in a tiny vase...are they ok like that? Doesn't seem like a very good home for a fish.

Well they originate from living in really small spaces, so it's actually not THAT cruel, but I like to give them a gallon tank each.

The reason they are kept in such small environments is because they can breathe atmospheric air. That is why your doctors office has one in a small vase. But personally i think it is cruel. They need swimming space like any fish. My LFS keeps there bettas in bags inside a tank!!! What is that all about?!?!?! They are very prone to their fins getting nipped. I feel sorry for them.

They do a lot better in a 10 gallon filtered planted tank too.
