Like the title says I now hate whisper power filters. The whisper in my 10g has lost its power and barly puts out more than a trickle and the one that is used for my long 20g that is in my 55g at the moment has also lost its power and instead of water coming out from all parts of the out put it has water coming out of the left of it and the right of it but no water is coming out of the middle of the out put part of the filter. What filter would you all recommend for my 10g and long 20g because these filters just suck. :grr:

Aquaclear 30's Formerly 150's. They are good.. Will run you around $30 each.

Sure they don't just wan't a good clean might be blocked.

Well in the 10g filter it had alot of brown gunk in the intake tube towards the impeller and I was able to get it all out but it was no better, and the strange thing is that there is nothing else blocking the flow of the 10g. With the 20g filter for some reason I have to have it set almost on its lowest setting because if I turn it up any higher it starts to over flow where the intake tube is.

Is the pic what the filter looks like, i clean inside the impellor part with a tooth brush then now and again i remove the impellor and give it a bang on the side to get all the gunk out.

Oh yeah I forgot that I never cleaned that impeller part that you can take out and clean. When I take it out will all the water come out of it when I take it off?

Usually, you have to clean the twirly thingamagig. The magnetic thingy may be grimy. Usually when I do that, the filter works fine. I extended the life of my whisper by doing that.

But now, like Soaup, I use Aquaclear, much less twitchy. It has run dry twice (After long holidays and lousy tank watcher) and it still works very well. Talk about abuse.

Turn filter off water will come out of it, so use a bucket and clean impellor and other parts then it should start running at full efficiency.

Should I put the filter media in some tank water? What would you recommend I do if that doesn't help?

Yes i just put mine in a container with some tank water, a filter is only good if you maintain it well, i'm always cleaning my filters so they run at there best, as if the filter is not running well, desease and bad water quality.

Well I cleaned the impeller in the whisper in the 10g it has stronger but is still weak and it used to be alot more powerfull when I first got it. I'm going to clean the one for the 20g after I feed the fish. What else can I do to get this filter running like it used to?

Good bang on the side lol, have you checked everything, even cleaned the tubing.

I cleaned the intake tube, I cleaned the impeller. Would putting a new filter cartridge help it, maybe its so dirty that water can't get through easily. What would cause the problem with the other whisper filter I have to keep it on low because if I turn it any higher it over flows over the intake tube?

Durb - did you take the impeller out of teh filter when you cleaned it? I have a whisper one and it was a pain to get seperated, so i'll tell you what i learned. Turn the base part 90 degreese (doesn't matter which direction) and PULL hard. That made it alot easier to clean out.

Yeah thats what I took off and I cleaned it out with a cotton swab(looks like this since I don't know the proper name of it http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/t...-Cottonswab.jpg ) and got all the gunk out of it but it still isn't really as powerful as it was when I bought it. With the filter for the 20g all I did was take the media out then I put it back in and the output powerfulness returned to normal which seemed wierd to me.
