Thanks to all the replies yesterday on my breeding platy problem. I have checked at the local LFS and they won't take fish outside their usual supplier. I know they are only fry but I am not sure I could bring myself to perform a "cull". I think I will leave it for now. Out of interest only, how do you cull fish? I read somewhere about putting them in the freezer - but no way that must be slow and painful.
I now have a platy that is harassing everything else in my tank, he owns the left side, the fry, gouramis and other two platys live on the right. He chases anything that moves towards his area. I am worried about the other fish. He is a proper bully and I would be only to happy to "cull" him!!!!

Rather then culling them, try giving them away on here. Try posting in Buy, Sell, and Swap.

There may be a reason why the fish is being aggressive. How many males and females do you have, and what size tank?

you could always try to rehome him ... get another tank or feed him to a bigger fish

Some lfs won't take fish because of insurance issues. I have a local lfs who will take my Molly fry, which is good as there is an endless supply! He gives me 50p each for them which I think is very reasonable of him. :)

He did say he doesnt think he would cull them... why dont you just return the male since livebearers are proving too much for you?

thats enough for me..

You can't say you hate platy's because they breed and are territorial. That could be said of any fish. IMO they are a characterful and interesting fish in their own right. The only time it is humane to cull fry is if they have any defects or aren't growing properly. But in a community tank, nature would have taken it's own course.

I'm just thinking of the options, the LFS's probably are thinking of their customers and don't want to sell unhealthy stock to their customers. Are there any fishkeepers you know near you that might want to take them, or maybe anyone else you know want's to start keeping tropicals as platy's are a good place to start.

If you wanna despose of the fish then do it by destroying its brain quick.

But rather se if you can get a new home!!!

I ain't going to kill my fish.
I was brought up to believe it is only right to kill an animal if you do it humanely and if you intend to eat it. I aren't eating platy fry!!!!!
I will let nature take it's course and if it gets too much I will rehome the little 'uns myself.

Killing the bully was only a figure of speech.

I asked the cull question out of a morbid interest.

get a 10 gallon.. get a nice oranda.. and feed them to him.. he will get fat and big fast.. then sell him online for $100 and some! haha

my appologies,
I had the same problem when i started out with plattys.......lucky for me i convinced my 2 sisters to get tanks and shall we say the problem was sorted....lol
as for humanely putting fish to sleep i would go for clove oil.so its like us having to much anesthetic and never waking up.... a peacefull death....make sure you have the clove oil mix right.there is plenty of information about the subject around.
