One of my female bettas got it.. no clue why or how.. it seemed to have started right after I did a water change...

Medicated it and it seemed to be doing alright last night.. the fungusy tail rot stuff is gone, but it's stomach is pineconed.

I'm disappointed.. I thought something was wrong with it when I bought it long ago, because it never really swam around... I guess I hoped I could save it.

I don't think the water could have been bad enough to start dropsy, but I guess it was.

Now I'm going to set up air pumps and filters in the bettas tanks

Yea, I bought a female betta and put her in my 10 gallon about 2 months ago and a month or so goes by and she got dropsy and got so big and so pineconed that i didnt have time to do anything about it and she passed 1 day after I realised she got it. I probably could've done something about it if she wouldve come out of the darn cave... :(

my yellow VT got dropsy about a month after i had him, too. To be honest, I didn't do anything. Actually, i was really busy at the time so I was even a bit lax on my water changes. He recovered on his own, though he was really weak and had a hole in his side.

it's very likely there was something brewing in that fish before you got it, but it's certainly no sure death sentence.

ugh, dropsy is nasty, the pineconing is cause by kidney failure, which is pretty uncurable. There have been reports of bettas recovering from early stages of dropsy, but once the fish gets super bloated and pineconing badly, theres really nothing that can be done :-(

It was pretty much overnight.. was fine at night.. the next morning its tail looked a little weird.. put it in a 5g with filter and heater.. along with meds.. the next day (today) all the fungusy stuff was gone, but I noticed it was all pineconed and breathing heavily.. I'm pretty sure it will die overnight.. if it doesn't I will put it down tomorrow.

Isn't it epsom salt baths that are recommended? I am not usually good at the medicating thing.
