OK all,
When we went out to eat tonight at the steak house I asked for a slice of zuchini. The waiter kind of looked at me funny but oh well, So I took the piece home and stuck it in water and nuked it for about 60 seconds. I then put it in the tank and my new Plecostomus is :hyper: :S :hyper: GOING NUTZ!!! Thanks again for the help....and are there any other suggestions???

I keep a bag of sliced up zuke in the freezer for my plecs. Nuke it for 1 1/2 minutes, and toss it in. Only thing I do different is scoop out the seeds, as they don't seem to eat these and they end up all over the tank.

Hey Tolak... I was wondering about freezing sliced zucchini for my plec. I've been keeping one in the fridge and slicing off as needed but it doesn't last that long and way more than half ends up in the trash. :( I've got part of one right now that I am going to slice and try freezing.

How often do you feed stuff like this? I have had the slice in for about 14 hours so far and I am about to take it out. IF the freeze stuff works please let me know. Thank you

I cut the zuke into 2" lengths, then cut each piece lengthwise, so they are D shaped if looked at from the end. Put them in a ziploc bag and freeze them. I put 2 frozen pieces in a coffee cup with water and nuke for 1 1/2 min. Then I scrape out the seeds with a spoon and end up with a C shaped piece of zuke. Next I clip them to my home made gizmo that consists of a clothspin held to a rock with a cable tie with a piece of nylon cord attached. Lower it in, and if anything is left after 36 hours i pull it out. They get fed this once every 7-10 days.

I froze zucchini once, but it got really hard to cut it. Should have cut it before. I've also read that you should remove the skin b/c it lack nutrients, and same goes for the seeds. Warming it also makes it decompose faster , though...

I dice mine into small squares and then blanch it so that everybody gets their fair share, I have 14 loaches in my 120 and if I stuck a slice in there would be a huge crowd around one little slice of zuccinni so chunks work best ,this way my cichlids can get some too :p

Never tried freezing it  , I'll have to do that the next time I find some on sale pretty cheap, I'll stock up! :p

Hey all!

Can you guys describe or show me a link on zucchinis? I have cories, so maybe i'll try feeding them that.

Thanks,

P.T.

Would zucchini work for cories??
My cories never touch zuchinis... They do like vegetarian flakes/palletes but never the raw vegetables... (At least for me).

Do you guys remove the skin? So far, I've been removing both skins and seeds - that doesn't leave much "meat" for my bristlenoses to eat... :D

The worst ones were the lighter and fatter ones I bought the other day. Geeze, the seed pretty much filled the whole thing - I had about 5mm of stuff left by the time I removed all...

Oh by the way, for me, cucumber works just as well as zuchinis...

I read all of this and tried it out. My pleco's didnt touch it and neither did my loaches. :dunno: Maybe mine dont like the stuff. It was in there for about 30 hours and when I pulled it out it looked the same as it did when I dropped it in. I sat infront of it and watched for an hour or so and they didnt touch it. Then I threw some alge disk in there and they all jumped on them. Does it take them awhile to get used to it or try it out? One of my cory's pecked at it a few times, but lost interest real quick.

What kind of pleco do you have? Did you heat it up (submerged in water) in the microwave before feeding? I find that mine are much less interested when I put a fresh piece in. When done correctly, it rarely lasts over 24 hours in the tank...

My cory cats didn't bother it but the very first time my Plecostomus ate most of it. I did not remove the skin but it didn't seem like it bothered him very much. I have heard of using other stuff also like cucumbers, lettuce, squash, and ect. I will have to try squash next.

Do plecos eat skins as well? So far, I didn't have to remove anything out of the tank since they eat each pieces completely, that is, without the skins...
