Ok so I bought a tank, (a rio 180) and it had two red belly piranhas in it, the guy said that he couldn't re-home them and they came with the tank, I took them as I thought that I would have more chance of re-homing them than the guy I got the tank off.

My son took a liking to them and we decided that he could have them in his room (hes not a child hes 20 !)

Left them in the big tank for a couple of weeks. While we cycled a spare tank with mature media.

Found an old tank in the garage, cycled it with media from a tank that had been running for two years, the tank is 2.5 foot long, and holds about 90 litres, its about the size of an aqua one 640, although we dont know what type of tank it is. we appreciate that this is not big enough, and he has a larger tank coming next week, hes doing daily water changes of about 20% feeding them and looking after them very responsibly.
We thought that although the set up is not perfect, with the extra filtration (eheim external, and up and over filter for extra water flow) it would of been better than what fate they could of faced if we left them behind.

So son has gone away for the weekend, and asked me to do the water changes on the tank, and feed them tomorrow for him. Tbh i thought he would be bored by now by them but far from it!!

I turned the light on, and started to do a w/c and thought id just gravel vac to make sure and all of a sudden all these little fry appeared I dont know where they came from or what they are. They are smaller than a guppy fry, i mean really really tiny, but defiantly fry.

The tank that the fish are in, has not been used for about a year, and is only kept as a spare, emergency, qt type tank, I siphoned as many as i could into a bucket, and now have the ones that i could save in a fry net in my kitchen tank.

The tank has been running about 6 weeks in all, and I have no idea what these fry could be, can anyone help on here???

Also piranhas are a completely new fish to me so if the care of them dosnt sound ideal please let me know, I only have the fish best interests at heart.

thanks in advance for any answers
posted this in the tropical disscussions forums but had no replys now ive worked out how to get photos thought id try here, some one told me they could be piranha fry but im not so sure!!!!

WOW. That's all I can say. Rbp's are considered rather difficult to breed and usually kill each other if kept in pairs. You are extremely lucky. Don't go add another fish now that you have a pair and have fry though. The water change and new tank could have been a spawning trigger as piranhas usually spawn after the dry season at the beginning of the wet.

For starters, go check out piranha fury and piranha cove for breeding stuff. I've found both pages to have very good info in that regard.\

EDIT: You also need a bigger tank. If you are keeping just a pair (I think this is fine, not really sure though, I only have kept serras), a 55-75g should work.
