Im sorry to start off on such horrible terms, but my 3 betta's Ive had for 1 and a half years have died. They were looking ill a couple days ago and I thought I would medicate them, that did not help and now i am out of luck and my bettas have left me. Should I get more betta's or have I made a mistake in buying bettas?

They were probably just old. :) If you feel you're ready for more, then I say go ahead and get them. They weren't in the same tank were they? :S

I've never been able to keep a betta for longer than a year, so at a year and a half - I think that's amazing! You haven't made a mistake - you've been a great betta owner!

I do think you should check your water and your food just to make sure there isn't something wrong with it. Betta_Love is right that there is a great chance it was just old age, but I know I'd feel uncomfortable knowing that three passed away at the same time. You can always bleach the tanks and decorations and tools (you'll need new gravel - it's impossible to bleach), rinse them well in water, and soak them in water with extra declorinator in it, then let them air dry for a few days if you think it's an illness before you get new bettas. Bleach will kill off almost any type of infectious agent, so that way you won't worry about spreading something. (I know I did that when my last betta died and I wasn't sure of the cause.)

also, ask around and see if anybody recently used cleaning sprays, deodorizer or any other airbourne chemical around the bettas. more than a few on here have lost bettas due to fume exposure.

aw. i'm sorry that all your betta died at the same time.

but that does sound a bit fishy?

seriously...1 year is old?

fishy, maybe, maybe not, i mean, if it was bought at a pet store, there is no telling just how old they are.

See, what pet stores do (as far as I know), is that they put their bettas out in a variety. When they don't sell, they ship to another store, and they get other stores' bettas in that didn't sell, and they keep cycling them until they are sold, die etc.

My first bettas was a pet store, he lives nearly 4 years. The my second betta, also a pet store, i think was old when i got him, and died not long after, maybe a year or so.

If you buy from breeders, you can tell exactly how old they are, as the breeder will obviously know when they were bred. Pet stores, they just receive them from suppliers, and really have no idea.

but anyway, i am sorry for your loss. It is very difficult!

They were all in separate tanks. I am not sure how they all died, but they are all buried now. Just RIP little guys, RIP. I am going to clean out all the tanks and let them sit around for a couple days, wash them out with hot water and then try it again. Bettas are the tropical fish with the most personality.
