I Don't Like Sand!

Paul, that tank looks awesome! Is it yours? What kind of fish are in it?

Thank you,

In this tank I have the following fish:

1 female golden Angel,
1 eight yr old male Opaline Gourami,
3 harlequin
3 neons
2 zebra [botia] loach
2 BN plecos
6 Cories - I forget their species, have it written down somewhere, but they look like this:

In my opinion, if your going for bogwood / planted effect -then sand is deffinatly worth considering, although for plants that take in nutrients mostly through their roots, a fine pea shingle may be better.

Paul.

Actually some types of sand are used to make glass, it is melted down in really high temperatures. you should not be scared of using sand, unless the filter actually pushes it to the glass.

that type of sand is still quarts :nod: both quartz and glass are silica oxides; the only difference is the crystal structure (the way the atoms are arranged).

most of the white-ish sands bought as play sand or pool filter sand are quartz particles; ditto for the inert aquarium sands. aquarium sands which have buffering properties are partially quartz and partially other calcerous materials. i'm afraid that i don't really know what constitutes the colored types of aquarium sand; i'd guess that some of them (such as black) are just other inert types of rock, while other colors (such as teal) are coated inert rock.

Nice tank Paul. Damn i envy everyone with a big tank. Just put sand in mine for the sake of the cories and it looks amazing with the light on.

Yes, poop and detritus sits on top of the sand and is consequently very obvious.

Which is miles better than it sinknig down into the gravel where it can't be seen and rotting down to make more ammonia and thus nitrite and nitrate :) And mess isn't even that obvious unless you're keeping plecs or snails- I have sand in both my tanks and you can't see any mess, whereas it's absolutely essential for the fish.

I have sand in all but my 5 gal tank and I love it! It looks so much better then gravel and as already mentioned you can actually get all the poo out and it's not left at the bottom of the gravel to rot away.

Here's my biggest tank,you can see how nice the sand makes it look;

And my cory tank, again you can see how much nicer it looks after I changed to sand;
