The other day, my lfs had baby  rams, peacock, and jewel cichlids. The sign said they only reach 2 inchs, which I found hard to believe. Could I have one (or two) of either one of these is with either gobies (freshwater) or platies? The tank size would be a ten gallon.

You were right to disbelieve your lfs. For example, Jewels grow to ~6", Rams ~3" and as for Peacocks, they grow to ~30"!!! The first and last one are also very aggresive!!

Yea, not sure why your lfs would tell you that. Hemichromis bimaculatus (jewel cichlid) are extremely nasty.

Also, like mentioned if you mean the SA cichlid, Cichla ocellaris for peacock cichlid, they, like mentioned, get to 30" but I think you might be talking of the Aulonocara's from Lake Malawi. They get around 5-6" but are still too aggro and quick for rams.

You could possibly get a ram pair for a 10 but the others mentioned would be too large and aggro.

also don't forget that there is a difference two there are "peacocks" from south/central america, and they do as emjay said reach a size of around 24-30 inches, but there are also a a group of cichlids from lake malawi that are known as peococks, ( the aulonocara's) and they generally reach a size of between 3-6 inches. and also you shouldn't mix afriacans and new world cichlids as the body languages are totally different and can make for some problems

I beat ya. :p

Great post tho juan. :smb:

I dont know why you would say rams are aggresive.

My rams live with gourami, a very peaceful fish. Rams are well known as being a very peaceful community cichlid.

My jewel was nice until I bought him a gf and they terrorized the whole tank. They only got along with my auratus, which are also little devils. It's rare for a Jewel to reach 6 inches. Usually it's more like five.

There are LOTS of varieties of peacocks that reach all different sizes but they are good in cichlid community tanks. They get along with most other cichlids.

Not sure who you mean, but I don't see where anyone said rams were aggro? We were all saying that the jewel and peacock were compared to the rams.

That's exactly what I was saying about the jewel and I've had quite a few get to 6" although I said 5-6" and 5" would be more the norm.

Yea, I agree 100% here.

There aren't lots, imo, that can live with a pair of rams in a 10g.

smb is totally right there aren't ANY peacocks that will live in a 10 gallon

Oh, I don't think any peacocks could live with rams. I didn't know they wanted to keep something in a ten gallon.

Emjay: The first and last one are also very aggresive!!

The first was rams and the last were jewels.

Oh ok Auratus. We just got our lines crossed.

He actually said-
Jewels grow to ~6", Rams ~3" and as for Peacocks, they grow to ~30"!!!

The first and third were aggro but now I know what you meant and we were all on the same page the whole time. :)

Oh, DUH!!!!! :*)

I think someone needs to actually read the posts, not just skim them! -_-

so let me sum up what eveyrone had just said. get rams. jewels n peacocks outta the question due to aggression and lack of space.
