I know, I know - I said NO MORE bettas, but.........

Saw this poor little guy on AquaBid and he was cheap due to the nipped fin (hopefully it will grow back) and got him.

Since he is going to be the kitchen betta, I have decided to call him Betta Crocker (a play on Betty Crocker).

Awww....he's lovely and that fin will grow back in no time. We've had betta's worse than that and within a few months of clean water their fins have fully recovered :good:

I didn't say it, but I was thinking it :p

It was just inevitable that you would get another.

So when does this lovely boy arrive with you?

Oh gosh....that's a long wait. How on earth will you cope

Actually one of our girls has a big chunk out of her anal fin from spawning a few weeks ago. It's already half way healed up so it wont take long for him to grow his back and he's such a lovely colour. I love cambodians.

"I love cambodians."

I do too!!!! Tell the truth, I love them ALL!!! :)

I have a question for you - in a 5 gallon, heated, planted tank without a filter, how often does the water need to be changed?

I started off not liking cambos but the more I saw them the more I grew to love them. Actually I must confess we bought another female off ebay tonight

I would say you'd be looking at changing twice a week. One about 25% and the next one 50%. It's always best to check your stats in between to guage when the ammonia starts to show....that way you can work out when it needs changing and how much.

i had a similar set up...get LOTS (and i mean LOTS) of fast growing plants like elodea and camboba and plant it UP...
my set up ran for 7 months (with diligent testing) without any detectable levels of anything...i did a FEW water changes minus the top ups just becasue...i had gravel substrate than switched to sand...
then i had a power outtage for 83 hours and algea took over...got rid of all but my BGA that found its way in...but i made a small sponge filter and PRESTO...levels all 0 again...so if you have loadddds of plants, test everyday and you may be suprised on how little you have to do water changes...but you do need lots of plants!!!! with decent light (but not too much or then youd have to do CO2 which is a whole different ballgame) youll be shocked at how well plants just "do their thing" and use up all the nitrogenous waste...in whatever form they can get it!
dont forget to dose.

Lol, love the name. That is a very good pick and can't wait to see more pics when the fins grow back!

congrats ,, what a lovely guy ^_^

take care of him to see him in the perfect look

Thanks so much for all the nice comments and terrific advice!!! I have decided I am going to go ahead and filter the tank with a Whisper Internal Micro filter. It is rated for tanks 2 - 5 gallons and is adjustable. I will set it on the lowest setting even though it will be on a 5 gal. tank because this particular betta HATES water movement!!!! Hopefully, the trickle that comes out of that particular filter at the lowest setting won't bother him and it will at least be SOME filtration - along with the plants (anubias, java fern, fava moss, a moss ball and African water fern (?) ).

And, Netty, I will cope with the wait by taking care of my other "kids" - 7 bettas, a 50 gal. tank, a 75 gal. tank, two parrots, two cats and, of course, the wonderful husband that makes it all possible!!!! :)

Hahah classic name! If he is your KITCHEN BETTA....where are the rest? Im curious to know so i can use that excuse with my fiancee' ;) oh and what do you keep them in??

I have 6 bettas upstairs by my computer - Fred, Big Red & Ricky live in a divided 20 gal. high, Confetti & M.G. live in a divided 10 gal. and Wizard lives in a 5 gal. tank by himself.

In the living room I have Blizzard in a a3 gal. Eclipse.
