I seem to be struggling a lot with plants atm. Ive had 2 bundles of plants one from Last Trading Post on ebay and 1 From Java Plants. And try as I might most keep dieing

I didn't use a planting substrate as at the time of setting up the tank I didn't know enough to realise I needed one.

Light is approx 1.5 WPG and ive been dosing TPN+ and Easy Carbo I also have planted root tabs.

Red Ludwigia - Dead
Red Ivy - Dead
Elodea Densa - Dead
Valis - Dead in about 3 days flat.
Elodea Densa - Dead all the small leave went brown and mushy

Hygrophilia Polysperma Hard to say the upper part of the plant is doing reasonably well tho some of the lower leaves are browning.

Cambomba Carolina intially thrived and reached the water level then a lot of it went mushy and broke off.

Pygmy Chain Swords seem to be surving As does Hairgrass/Parvula

Dwarf Sag - Unsure it was a little worse for wear when it arrived so i trimmed the damage off and planted it.

At this stage im not sure what to do I realise by puchising bundles many of the plants may have been unsuitable for my light levels I really don't want to give in on planted tanks but it's been getting me so down watching a plant initially do ok then turn to mush and die I don't know if its worth pursuing. I will admit my lights have been on probably more than they should have (timer now ordered).#

I've read quite a few posts saying that a lot/most plants will still grow in low tech tanks yet I'm killing them could my ferts/carbon be the cause or do I just flat out suck at this lol

Should I look for a 'low light' bundle or would I be better targetting specific plants and if so what should I look at ? Easy Carbo i dose at recommended level TPN + ive tried dosing at both what the bottle says and what i've seen recommended on here.

You don't need a planting substrate, if you provide enough nutrients through dosing there is no need. Some plants like crypts and echinodorus do take up more through the roots but root tabs can cover that.

vallis died in my tank too - it hates easycarbo.

elodea densa shouldn't have died, not sure what red lud and red ivy is. I know some ludwiga needs high light though. (I don't know any nicknames really..)

polysperma lower leaves might be dying because light can't reach the bottom?

cambomba probably should have been trimmed before it reached the top and also thought it requried moderate lighting.

parvula should be fine..I have it in mine. pygmy are easy to grow so also should be fine.

lighting should be 6 hours a day. If they're over 8 then they will grow too much without the required nutrients. I have less than 1.5WPG and my plants are doing well (except the vallis for reasons above^)

I did use tropica substrate though, but that won't make much of a difference. Also use tropica root tabs, easycarbo(I don't overdose this although I believe you can) and overdose TPN+ but they were doing fine with normal dosing of TPN+.

get amazon swords, I like them a lot, probably one of my fastest growing plants, looks great and has a nice colour imo. Crypts, java ferns, anubias, java moss, hygrophilia difformis(I have this- does great in my tank), bacopa species,

Check out my blog for my plant list...

Light if im honest has prob been on for 10 or 11 hours a day until last few days. The timer on order will sort that The issue of to much light could well be why the cambomba has partially gone mushy.

I think bundles for low light/tech are giving to many unsuitables in my case anyway.

That certainly seems like the culprit!

I saw a good selection of plants on a blog the otherday, I think it was ryefish. I made a mental note as it looked like a decent amount of plants for the price. Not sure how you pick them though... Good real looking plants are pretty expensive and still look fake so I couldn't ever never go fake! :p

I forgot i had ordered these from plants Alive a week or so ago

5 x Elodea Densa

1 x Aponogetum Crispus

5 Eleocharis Parvulus (dwarf hairgrass)

10 x mini Amazon Sword

5 x Bacopa Monnerii

5 x Twisted Vallisneria

10 x Sagittaria Natans

5 x Rotalla Indica

Just so im prepared for the worst which of these are likely to live/die in a low tech tank with ferts/carbo/rootabs all used ?

5 x Elodea Densa - should thrive

1 x Aponogetum Crispus - not the easiest, might die might not, acidic water helps apparently

5 Eleocharis Parvulus (dwarf hairgrass) - slow but should survive

10 x mini Amazon Sword - Are these just baby plants?

5 x Bacopa Monnerii - bacopa caroliniana would have been better but monnieri should still grow well

5 x Twisted Vallisneria - will die with easycarbo, mine did anyway

10 x Sagittaria Natans - not sure

5 x Rotalla Indica - not sure

Thanks for the replys ill plant everything bar the Valis I dont need to plant that to know it will die lol

In future I think ill by individual groups of plants as opposed to bundles and do better research into low light plants.

Quite demoralising to only have 6 living plants out of all ive had

Plants arrived today the bundle that i listed above plus a good chunk of hygrophilia difformis

They also sent a little thankyou of a bunch of plants they had to many of I've no clue what most of them are so i took some (bad) pictures to see if the great and good here can maybe shine some light on them.

The one on the left in the first pic looks a little like cabomba to me ?

The plant 2nd from the left and far right could be the same plant now I look at them a 2nd time

And finally the last pic only 1 I'd even have a guess at here is the top one could it be Pygmy Chain Sword ?

from the top, first pic...

cabomba, Vallisneria americana natans, either Hygrophila polysperma Rosanervig or Alternanthera reineckii Lilacina

Egeria densa, looks like more vallis, more Alternanthera, Hydrocotyle verticillata, even more vallis

pygmy chains, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Hygrophila polysperma
