Driving home yesterday, I passed a house with a 10G tank sitting out near the curb. As a passed, I noticed it had no cracks, so I circle the block to pick it up. I figured if it had leaks, I'd just use it for my mealworm farm. It had no lid, no filters, no lights. But hey, it's a free tank!

But as I get closer I notice there is something else clear inside of it. AND I notice it's actually holding rainwater.

Turns out the clear object inside of it is a one-gallon tank with UG filter, air hose and stone, gravel, and lid. It had a light bulb, but the entire light fixture was gone.

So grab an air pump and maybe a heater, and I have the perfect betta breeding tank!

Then I clean up the 10-gallon and dry the outside, place it on a large piece of cardboard on the floor, and fill it up. No leaks for about 30 mimutes of observation!

I just scored two free tanks simply by driving home! And that one gallon is shorter than the 10-gallon, so as betta fry grow, I can set the entire thing into the 10-gallon as a fry grow-out tank, and not worry about catching tiny babies, injuring them by moving them, or missing any! Just let them grow and swim up and out of the top of the 1G.

Did you ask the house owners where the tank is on the front yard if the tank was free to pick up?

Sounds good though.

Maybe you can start a journal about your betta breeding ;)

Lol I was going to say that ch4rlie!

But yeah, love free and cheap stuff, one mans junk is another mans gain :)

Well done

I doubt many people will leave a tank outside unattended on the pavement if they wanted it, if I did that and it went missing I would only blame myself, you would be suprised how common it is to find discarded tanks after people get bored or the fish die, I have bagged a few in my time one came with free fish lice, nice!

lol I was quite young then and didn't think about making sure it was cleaned properly, I actually thought they were cute until they started damaging my fish! hence why they dumped it...

No, I didn't ask, because the house looked dead empty (not even blinds on the windows) and had a For Rent sign in the yard. Pretty certain the cleaning crew left it out there for the trashmen to pick up because the former tenant left it behind.
