Hi all, just made this account quickly to ask this question about my betta.

I've had him a little over a year and as long as I've had him he's always been a bit..hyperactive. I've never been too worried but I wasn't sure if this was normal behaviour or not? My friend has a betta and his just sits around all day. Mine will swim around normally, sometimes flares at his filter, but the second I go anywhere near his tank he goes crazy. This wouldn't surprise me if he was just hungry, but I feed him enough everyday (as far as I know) and his tank is right behind me all day every day. So he acts hyper quite a lot whenever I move or even look at him. Is this normal behaviour? Is there possibly anything wrong with him?

Betta splendens can all have very different personalities and quite often do tend to be quite hyper. it just sounds like you have a healthy fish, just make sure you dont overfeed him as they can suffer from bloat. id also be careful he doesnt get to bored as they they often do when kept on there own.

in the wild bettas spend there days patrolling there territory and looking out for females so theyre naturally stimulated in the wild.

how big is your tank? might be worth getting him some tank mates (not another betta of any sex) good tank mates can be pygmy cories, cories, any small tetra that doesnt nip, i have found glowlight danios to be good tank mates. but these all depend on your tank size.

other ways to keep him occupied are things like live food and a well planted tank

hope this helps Lloyd

That does help a lot, thank you. The tank is about 5 galleon, I do however have a new tank set up which is about four times the size. I was originally going to get a community in there but I just don't have the time these days so I figured I'd move my betta in there when I get a chance to set it up. I put a snail in his tank months ago, he got really territorial and aggressive so I had to take it out. Maybe when I move him into the bigger tank he'll accept some tank mates.

Would you recommend any of those tank mates over others? I'm worried that if I introduce a fish to his tank he might kill it. \

And live food.. I can do that. Thanks a lot for the advice :)

Its hard to recomend tank mates with bettas because each one can be so individual. the thing with snails is you would of been much better off to chuck a few in and you'll probs find he wouldnt have had a problem.

i know lots of people recomend small tanks for bettas but trust me, if you put him in a larger tank he'll definatly be alot happier, some times i think this tiny tank rule for bettas rule was made by betta enthusiasts who want to keep as many as possible.

if you add him to the new tank and intend to give him tank mates, i would suggest adding them first just to be safe.
