Hydrosponge Question

Hi everyone
I had a couple of hydrosponge related questions...
1) can a hydrosponge be used as the primary filter in a tank? I mean something like a #5 in a 29 gallon tank?
2) I've read that you can hook up a powerhead to the sponge? Does this have any advantage?
I have an extra hydrosponge and that just got me thinking...

1) Yes it can, I have sponge filters as the only filter in fry tanks.

2) This will increase the mechanical filtration by increasing the water flow, but decrease the bio filtration.
