Is there a specialized hydrometer that you can purchase for brackish water aquairums? I just bought one and it turned out to be one specialized for saltwater aquariums and the SG is 1.012 lowest... which doesn't work for me as I'm looking to have my tank low end brackish, 1.007-1.004...

The Instant Ocean swing arm hydrometer starts at 1.000 and costs less then $10 at PetCo.

hydrometers are ok but why not get an electronic salinity meter? remember a change in water temp can effect the reading you get with the hydrometer. i've seen one meter at £25 plus p and p

I found one at Big Als, the Hagen Deep Six one I bought started at 1.012, which doesn't work for me so I'll be returning it to my work monday and getting the hydrometer from big als tuesday...

...because most brackish fish are not that sensitive to salinity changes. So a $50+ refractometer is usually a waste of money.

I'm buying the instant ocean one from Big Als... Also, boboboy as ac said... $50+... why buy that when I can buy one for $10 and be just as happy? For a Saltwater tank that'd certainly be the right choice... but for brackish, it's easier and less expensive to go with the Instant Ocean hydrometer...

I have the same problem, I bought one from Aquatics online but accidentally ordered the wrong one, only going down from 1.010 to 1.030.

Go to a wine making store and get a hydrometre. Likely cheaper than a fish store and will work just fine. Test in water at about 85F, s/b a reading of 1.0000000000000000000000000000000
Vic

See, that's a good idea Vic, however I live in Canada and the closest wine making store is in Muskoka(or somewhere like 2 hours north of me), anyways, having my water at 85F wouldn't be good for the fish either (would it ????) aswell... having the water at 85F would greatly contribute to the evaporation rate, which is already high because it's brackish water...

and who cares anyways? it's $10... I can make that back helping a customer for an hour at my work...

I have the instant ocean one too and its dandy, I had heard somewhere cant remember where, that the ones for wine making are different in some way.
