Hydro Sponge

I have a Hydro Sponge IV in my 75gal tank and well my turtle's eating the crap out of it. To stop him from ingesting more sponge I want to take it out... but will this cause a mini cycle in my tank??

Or does anyone have ideas on how I could stop the stupid #29### (lol, I really love him to death, I swear). Maybe some kind of net...?
