I'm looking for special hybrid gambusia of Eastern and Western gambusia because the hybrid of both sexes are melanistic which is striking lookin. So I can add colors to my gambusia tank which look bored. Also I'm wait for my female gambusia drop her hybrid fry from father guppy. I had her for a year with no males but she is gavid I can see huge black spot near anal fin.

Are you on about the Innes cross still?

The cross is G. affiffis (east board) cross with G. affinis holbrooki (west board), if i remember correctly.

The cross produce motteled males and females

This a nice fish in theit own right so why cross them?

Innes's cross is a stunning fish, but i still prefer the ture fish.....

kawaiikitsune: what would u cross them with then?

I'd cross them with the closely resembling fish we all know as the guppy. It's been done before and I'd be anxious to see the results for myself.

But their not closely related!

The gonopodium structure is very different and the body structure is very different, Gambusia's are more related to the pike livebearers then the guppy.

I've been breeding livebarers for 20 years and been in the specialist side of the hobby for 15 years and have never seen any proof of a cross, word of mouth yes. However never any physical evidence as in any documentation and photo's what so ever.

Do u know of any?

Hi guys,
I know i'm late to this topic..
I live in South FL . There are few variations of gambusia / different populations .. Fresh water ,brackish water and salt water.. Depending on location , you can find very slight difference in appearance..

I wanted to know if there is any one here , some what of an expert on gambusia, Or some one with lots of experience keeping the different types.. Mainly Holbrooki and Affinis.. What are the visual difference between
both.. Spotted varieties .. ?????

I have developed a spotted population of females from wild caught fish..
I have been keeping fish for about 30years , since a kid elementary shcool..
I have only been able to collect 4 wild spotted females in the last 10 years..
There are some populations with many spotted males and some populations with no spotted males..

I'm intressted in the cross of both types of gambusia that produce spotted females ...
below is pic of few of my strains..

Is it possible to cross gambusia affinis/holbrooki with gambusia ryiphorzae

I have a strain of gambusia i have been working on fo 5 years and wanted to cross them with another type to see how they would end up, so far i started out with some gambusia affinis from hawaii then i crossed them with some gambusia affinis from new jersey then i crossed them with some spotted gambusia holbrooki for aquabid then i crossed them back to the hawaiian strain and i ended up with spotted males and an ocasional female with some spots. but the strain from hawaii is larger then any other strain i have ever seen so it added some great genetics to my strain.
so if it is possible to cross gambusia ryihporzae with my strain i might end up with colored fins

Hi Trimotoman,
I have crossed Several times = Affinis / Holbrooki With Rhyzophorae..
Was hopeing to add color to affinis / holbrooki... Results were Affinis / Holbrooki
looking fish on all the crosses.. I backed cross and side cross and every cross but
The only thing that happened was deluted the yellow/orange color out of the fins ..

The affinis / holbrooki gene is very strong.. I have crossed them to other types of
gambusia with always same results.. Affinis/Holbrooki looking fish..

This strenght in their genetics is one of the reasons , besides their aggresive behavior
towards other gambusia speceis that allowes them take over and wipe out other species..

Are you sure the Hawaiian gambusia you caught is Affinis ??
Can you try post clear pic of male and female ??

Michael Ronyane do lots of project on gambusia spp. He did cross the affinis (Innes and Albino types) to the rhizophorae and it resulted the male grow bigger in F1 then F2 and more generations later when the final generation's males are same size as the females. And in some cases the hybrid has more golden freckles along with black spots.

Have no idea what species from Second picture but looks like affinis/holbrooki with short "male part".

my male in the second pic has a real nice body shape and he was a large male to, he could have been the alpha male in the tank i had him in

wow, im glad ppl ACTUALLY talk about mosquito fish, no one else ever really does talk about them, 'cept me. i hav a male and a female Gambusia Affinis, and a whole LOAD of fry, lol! i might (try 2) crossbreed the mosquito fish w/ guppies, just 2 see if it would work and wut the fry would look like.
