ok ive got a tank big enough (i hope) to try and spawn some cichlids in... 20g tanks were too small... i think 33 is big enough..

ive got a 2-3 inch texas cichlid (not sure of sex but will find out tomorrow).. some little jellybeans.. some little convicts..

some good sized male convicts... and some good sized female parrots..

also have some jewel cichlids

a 2 inch red devil..

those are the cichlids i have to choose from to try some hybrids..

i think i might try 2 of the little convicts to start... just to see if the tank is big enough to try larger cichlids in... might even be too big for the little guys, but i think i will try it anyways..

another thing im thinking of is substrate... i guess its easier if i do no substrate.. but should i put anything in the tank besides fish.. i guess a couple caves and a piece of slate maybe..

so they can either lay on the glass, slate, or in a cave..

how does that sound?

im also getting a 40g plexi tank soon that i think i will try some of the larger cichlids in..

anyone got ideas/opinions on what i should try to spawn?

sorry im juist lost for words, considering you have all those cichlids in a 33 gal

He needs a whole public aquarium IMO!

I'm assuming the tank is empty and the fish are in other tanks and he has those fish to pick from to get a hybrid. i hope anyway.

Breeding hybrids is generally frowned upon, so I'm hoping that if you do manage to produce any you'll be keeping them to yourself, or at the very least making sure whoever buys them knows good and well that they are hybrids.

Breeding one of the male cons with a female parrot would get you jellybeans.

yea i thought about trying jellybeans...

found out my texas is a female..

i donno yet what to do..

busted my knee so i dont really have the ability to work on doing tank stuff right now

things will have to wait awhile

but about selling them.. i dont think i will have a problem selling them.. i know some people locally that like the hybrid thing.. and i used to work at a pet store and theyll take anything i give em

Hope the knee feels better, yeah i feel the same about the hybridization of cichlids. There are already thousands of cichlids no need for more. I currently though as much of a hypocrit as i sound have a female auratus who i believe is holding some hybrid fry. Im really excited because it would be her first sucessful breeding but i dont really know what to do from there and understand the consequences.. Good luck with your breeding hybrids can be very good or very bad.

its not like there arent enough guppies either..

im not really considering what other people think in regards to it being ethical or not..

ive always liked fish that are different, so i think i will try to create some of my own..

i dont agree with people feeding feeders to their fish, but im not on a campaign trying to stop anyone.. some people get a weird enjoyment out of watching it, and thats fine with me, i just choose not to do it

i hope this topic isnt going to turn into a big fuss :/

i say go with the jellybeans. there are so many different concerns with ethically creating and distributing hybrids... the deeper you involve yourself with the project, the more issues i imagine you'll find. at least jellybean parrots have (relatively) known dispositions and final sizes. you'd have the least amount of ethical trouble by breeding them; you'd actually be doing some good, since your fry wouldn't be dyed like the vast majority of jellybeans are.

i have a dyed parrot, and it looks nothing like a jellybean... i think its a regular yellow parrot dyed bluey green..

i think im going to start off with a jellybean and a convict.. and see what happens.. theyre both under 2'' in length, so 33g should provide them with enough space to run away from each other..

i will also put a bunch of stuff in the tank for them to hide in..

but im still struggling with the gravel or no gravel part..

i thought about getting tons of gravel and making the tank really interesting with one side having like 6-7'' of gravel, sloping down to the other side with like 2-3''...

its going to be a wannabe show tank.. it actually has a stand (unlike most of my tanks which are on the floor) so i want it to look decent

if you want plants, add gravel. but i'd not go the the extreme of a 7" to 2" slope! perhaps a 4" to 1"? that way if your cichlids decide to level everything, you don't have waaaaaay too much gravel down.

if you want an easy way to get a stunning tank, splurge on plants. not only will they reproduce and spread (giving you an opportunity to recap your investment), but even the most common of aquarium plants is exotic to the non-fishkeeper. apongetons, crypts, lillies and red melon sword are my personal favorites.

--EDIT--
Cabomba/Hornwort!! soooo cheap and soooo prolific. just buy a single strand and let it float in your aquarium. it won't take long at all for it to reach 2-3 feet in length. and you can keep breaking off the branches to repeat the process.

i have some hortwart and cambomba in my 75g tank now, but they munch it all the time..

they just keep eating it..

so i dont know if im going to try plants with these guys..

theyre not going to have much of a lighting system either.. but i guess cambomba will be ok ..

im using a hood from a 10g tank to light the 33... as i have an extra hood, and dont feel like spending more bling bling on lighting
