I'm making plans to evacuate for Hurricane Dennis. It's not 100% that it's going to hit here, but my dad wants me evacuated by Friday just in case. My dilemma is ........ Do I take my bettas with me? I am definately taking my parrots if I go, I have travel cages for all of them. Would it be too stressful for the bettas? It'll be around a 3-4 hour drive. I would rather them be with me just in case this hurricane does end up being a big one, but I don't want to totally stress them out by moving them. I'm probably being over-cautious, but I'd rather be overprepared than underprepared.

Take them. If a hurricaine DOES hit you will regret not taking them. And they will be more stressed if no one is taking care of them. Since you have a bit more than a day to get out, I would get little bowls with lids and take them with you. I really wish you the best of luck, and I hope the hurricane stays away from you. For shipping them to wherever yo are going, either bag them or put them in their lfs cups so they don't slosh.

My dad will be staying. He's stubborn. :X He works at a casino and they'll put him up in their hotel if it's too much to stay at home. So they should have daily attention from someone that knows how to take care of them. I'm thinking it might be best to take them, cause there's no telling how much damage, and if there's a power outage, I won't be coming back until the power is back on. hrmph Just not totally sure it's a good idea either way, all the traveling could be very stressful too.

I wouldn't take them... chances are they'll be perfectly fine staying, especially since your father will be there. Maybe you could have him take them to the hotel with him if it gets too bad? It just seems like a lot of trouble and stress to take them when they'll probably be ok if left behind. :dunno:

If you really want to take them, take them. I know I would. You're going to be worried to death if you don't, aren't you? Just get them all a 1/2 gallon tupperware. They'll be fine in those for as long as you have to be where you are. Who knows how long your dad will have if the hurricane does hit, you know?

Can your dad be trusted to take care of them? If yes, then go ahead and leave them. If you have any doubts as to his willingness or ability to care for them, take them.

Mason jars work well, as do tupperware, 2 liter bottles, and kritter keepers.

Another vote for take them!! They will be fine in some plastic containers for a while ... use stress coat and set all the individiual containers down in a cooler to keep the temp from swinging.
Heck if you can ship fish then why not ride them with you for a while !!!

good luck though

If I were in your shoes, I'd load every single last one of them and take them along.

BUT... there are 2 questions I'd weigh first.
1 - what are the chances (based on weather reports, etc) that it's going to pummel you guys (I live way up in Wisconsin, know not much about hurricanes, and haven't heard much about this one)
and
2 - how many bettas do you have?

If it were me, I'd take them with me. I know I wouldn't sleep nights wondering if they were okay, even if the hurricane didn't hit.

I think I would take them - I'd be so worried!

HOWEVER if your dad will take good care of them, they may well be better off staying. I know you can ship fish and stuff, but if they dotn have to be stressed why stress them?

Having said that, some stress coat and tupperware would probably be ok too for a couple of days or so :) Good luck and i hope you and your family stay safe (and your birdies and bettas)

Sadie xx

how amny bettas do oyu have and what state are oyu in. i am in floirda(west coast on the water) and have no intentions of leaving it probally will graze past us but ive been threw frances, charlie and all that such and it wasent too bad. But if the hurricane shifts more west i have to trailer the horses to a evacuation place and then possibly evacuate the house and go to my gandparents  and they claim they are allirgic to fish :( :-( but i will say I MUST BRING THEM! lmao

Allergic to fish??? :sly: Give me a break. I'd like to see that one!! Yeah, weigh all of the options before you do anything, ya know?

Another vote for take them. :) Good luck in the hurricane. I hope everything is ok

I'm in Mississippi, right by the water on the Gulf Coast. My dad is certain it's going to hit us right on, although I think I'm going to watch the weather channel some more as I think they're a little more reliable. :p :p I have 8 bettas. I'm gonna watch the news up until I leave and see if there's more information by then. My dad's a fishkeeper as well, and he knows how to take care of my fish, so no worries there. But if it's gonna be more than a category 3, I'm taking everything I can fit in my car, including my fish. I have a huge cooler I can use, and 6 aquaviews that I've kept in storage., so I'd only need 2 more temporary homes, and I can get tupperware tanks for temporary homes for the last 2. After being so lucky with Ivan last year, I was less than 30 miles west from the eye, I'm not taking chances if another big one comes through. Thank god my inlaws live 3 hours north, it's a perfect escape.
