That's right, I live on the east coast of North America!lol now the problem is that if we lose power, my filter and my pump stop working. Is there anything that I can do to make sure my fish don't die on me?

Also, I do realise they'd probably be okay for like, a day or so but I'm worried about the long haul since the last big storm like this to hit NS knocked out power for a week.

you could get a generator

Hi Polley :)

The beneficial bacteria in your filter need both food and oxygen to survive. If the power goes out you can provide this by circulating tank water through the filter manually.

I'll move your thread to Tropical Discusion where it will be noticed by more of the members. Good luck with the storm. :good:

An option that you might want to consider is taking the filter media out of the filter and floating it in the tank. It will get some circulation that would have oxygen and ammonia in it. At the time the power comes back on you may need to put everything back together but at least the biofilter will have survived.

go to your local fishing supply store, sport supply store, or even someplace like walmart. in the fishing section they sell battery operated air pumps (used for keeping live bait for fishing). these battery operated air pumps are cheap, and will work in a pinch in a lights out situation. also, you could look into a sponge filter or box filter to attach to the air pump. with a cheap box filter or corner filter (which you could easily make yourself out of things you have lying around the house. like a 2l pop bottle), you can use your established media, and still have a good amount of bio-filtration.

You can buy portable battery jump starters. They are made mainly for jump starting cars, but mine has two outlets. You charge it when you have electricity. Could come very handy for cases like yours, and they are quite affordable.

If not, you can always buy battery operated air pumps. Most LFS should carry them.

hey thanks guys! yeah so the media made a big deal out of something that is now almost over and is just some high winds and rain lol. It's barely a hurricane

but i'll remember for next time to put the sponge from my filter in the water and to go see if I can get a battery operated pump:) thanks!
