I ordered driftwood and it came in the mail. It was smaller peices than I expected (read the dimensions wrong) so I went to the river and collected some. I made sure it was hardwood and not soft, and that it was throughly dry. I washed it.
EDIT: forgot to mention on piece is slightly too long to fit in my oven for the baking method

You can boil your wood by taking a boiling tea kettle with water and pouring over the wood.

Oh good :) I'm glad, I thought i was going to have to soak it in bleach (1 part bleach to ten parts water) and didnt want to risk it not rinsing off properly and killing my fish

Never bleach wood because the wood breaks down and the wood adsorbs the bleach.

If you want to disinfect anything from a freshwater creek or river, soak it in salt water for a few days, then rinse and dry. Add enough salt to the container of water so it no longer dissolves.

In hot weather you can leave the wood out in the sun to dry out, that will also kill anything on it.
