how to remove nitrAte??

R/O units have a huge ammount of wastage, even with a top of the line unit you will lose at least 3 gallons of water for every gallon of pure R/O created and some of the more budget models can lose as much as 10 gallons for each 1. The pressure needed to force the water through the membrane means that many gallons are bi passed completely and go straight down the drain.

Now I have to figure out the worth of RO water myself. :( I know some of the ones I was looking at had no bypass on them. They only did 55 Gallons per day and were as big as the 150 Gallon ones.

I may look into something such as a Brita inline systems then. I tested my Dad's Brita water compared to his tap water a few weeks ago. I was thinking this was an option before I got my 125 gallon. Tap water was the same as mine with a PH from 7.8 to 8.0 and a GH of 120 but after the brita it was 7.0 with a GH of 50 and no Chlorine or Chloramine and it produces no waste...

That would get my PH and water soft which is what I need and something like this, if they offer an inline version, might work for Nitrates......

I guess the question would be if a filter such as this:
http://www.geappliances.com/smartwater/household.htm

That can remove Chlorine could remove Nitrates and if so, how much?

I've been thinking of adding a Dual stage to my place anyways like this so I guess I will do this next month and see how the water turns out. I can't do nitrates though because I have no Nitrates in my tap water. :(

Lucky you!

I find it amazing that we here in Britain live on an island, and yet seem to pay so much for our water and it's still full of crap.

I haddnt thought about the water meter thing... hmm..

do any of your lfs sell RO water?

I know mine don't, but I can get it from Culligan at $3.50 for 5 Gallons, but that adds up.... :/

I know of 3 LFS in my area which sell R/O water and they vary in price from 12 to 18 pence per litre, again not really a cost effective solution unless you have just one small tank.

aaargh! seems there is no magic solution then. :-(

RO water is out for me - kit is a bit too pricey and my water wastage is high enough with a python. :/

I am going to look at the KENT option and the nitrazorb and the other thing (will have to go back through posts to remember what :*) )

Thanks for all the info though - I dont mind you highjacking SirMinion, even if u dont know who I am!!!! :fun: You have asked a lot more q's than I am have and got some good info. I will measure my tap water (again) and post up what it is. I dont seem to remember it being toooo high. Could it be that my filter is working to the max and coping it just that there is too much waste, so too much conversion, so too much nitrate?? That would mean reduce stocking or take out some ammonia to stop it getting converted as CFC suggested. I think. I'm learning :S

Does this logic hold up?

Ever confused  Cava :fish:
