How To Kill/euthanize An Ill Fish

while the best method is fill a container with cold water put it in the freezer until there is a thick sheet of ice on the water level.. shatter that and then place the tropical fish in that water and the fish dies instantly the key is the water must be very very cold not a small sheet of ice on the water.

So you say that would instantly kill it? If a human is put into -0C water we will not die instantly.Just recently (on the news) some guy fell through ice (in the north pole i think) and into freezing water, 3 mins later he was taken out and he recovered later on.Now a humans body temp is 37c and a tropical fishes much lower. Not saying fish and humans are the same but would it not be the same principle?

be we are mamals and we heat our bodies our selves. Fish cant heat there blood so there blood is the sam etemp as the water.

The only time I euthinized a fish was a betta with severe tuberculosis, and I used the clove oil method. It seemed quick and painless- she didn't thrash around or move at all, she seemed to just drift away.

Had to put a 10in oscar out of it's misery last week, even got my LFS owner to come round to see if anything elese could be done that I hadn't tried already there wasn't but that was a big plastic bag and one swift blow with a rolling pin in his opion that is the most humain way didn't feel like it when I did it mind I loved that fish.

As i said in another post my male golden severum had developed a disease.First of it looked like white spot, thne i noticed they were small growths. Now it looks like he has a big timur underneath his head which expands more and more everyday. You can't actually see it though, the white growths are still there however. It's so big that today his mouth is locked open.I don't think there is any treatments for this, but if there is could you please say!

the key there is shock. That and clove oil are the only meathods i'd ever use. The trick with those are that the fish goes instantaneously into shock (no pain whatsoever) or ODs on a fish anisthetic (absoloutly no pain whatsoever)

as for your severum, if it takes a serious turn for the worst, you use clove oil. extremely cold water only works for smaller fish. The other option is a hammer, but even though it is by far the best for the fish, its really a heartbreaker.

Decapitation is the quickest most painless method. All you need is a large butcher knife and a swift chop. Clove oil also works well. Freezing is a slow and painful death. Anyone who has a problem with killing their fish in a quick and humane manner has no business owning fish.
