I have been hearing a lot of ways to euthanize fish which people believe to be humane. Is there anything which can prove this? Clove oil, freezing or using a seltzer tablet!? Are any of these ways proven to kill a fish humanely, I cannot see how it can't be painful.Personally i feel just stomping on it (for a small fish), or leaving it in a dustbin to perish would be more humane!I would not do it though...Only way i really see to be humane is by putting the fish in a bag and 'whacking' it at a solid wall.Instant death basically garanteed. What do you think, whats the best way to euthanise a fish?

Whacking it off a wall is the way I've alwyas done it mate, not nice but a lot quicker than any of the others.!!!!

Thats what i was thinknig.Seems a bit stupid and experimental to do it any other way!

Freezing basically causes ice crystals to form in the blood, this then thickens until the fish has a heart attack and dies. Slow painfull death.

Boiling is fairly quick, but sometimes they have a muscle spasm which looks like they are still alive.

Swift blow to the head, instant death if done correctly, if you make a hash then obviously its not good.

Clove oil, not sure never tried it.

I always go with the blow to head, most humane way imo.

No as i said, i have only used the swift blow. I have heard others use the rest though.

Ductaping it to a bottle rocket. My cousin did that once.
You serious, thats just, well, weird!

O, thats ok then lol. However i am still only hearing that someone has heard it of another person.Has nayone actually used these methods?

It was at a lake. And I went fishing. Caught a blue gill. And where the hook caught it, it was dying. So, my cousin light the rocket, and it flew towards the recreational area, and blew up. Fortunately, it didn't hurt any people.

Ok..

The only fish I've ever had to deal with have been small fish like tetras. I jus put them in a small plastic bag and mash them with a brick. As mentioned, it's messy (the reason I use the bag) but they don't suffer at all.

I'm not sure how the ice crystals in the blood would make the fish feel pain, since cold is used for pain-relief a lot of the times. Fish blood is really thick, so I'm not sure if it would take it long to die in a freezer.

fortunately i havent had to deal with it yet but i have heard in a few places that if you get a small container of water and fill it with water and ice so that the water is very very cold and drop the fish in, it does within a second or two. this obviously would only work for small fish though as there is less area to freeze

Boiling tropical fish is a bad method for tropical fish as they are going from warm-hot water to HOT water and the death does not happen immediatly while the best method is fill a container with cold water put it in the freezer until there is a thick sheet of ice on the water level.. shatter that and then place the tropical fish in that water and the fish dies instantly the key is the water must be very very cold not a small sheet of ice on the water.

The boiling method works for cold water fish in the same premiss cold to HOT but the water must be BOILING.
Both these methods I have used and worked without a hitch. I find this method easier than the brick or wall or knife method however I will say this method is not fool proof and may not work if not done properly
