If possible I don't want to use the ph up chemicals from the pet store. Anyways, I need to increase my pc to atleast 7.0 Out of the tap it's 7.2 but in my tank it's 6.2 for some reason. I tried a 20% water change but it didn't budge from 6.2 yesterday. All I have in my tank in the 200watt heater, a filter I took from another tank, sand (playsand) on the bottom of the tank, and ofcourse fish. My ammonia is 0, so is the nitrites. Any help would be awesome.

Not long ago I had exactly the same problem.

What you want to do is gop to your LFS and ask for some coral sand. This wil not affect your water params other than your pH so dont worry. All it does it make you pH rise a bit. Likewise if you want to lower ytour pH buy some bog wood. Trust me this definately does thwe trick, but even though my LFS had it I don't know about your LFS.

Any other ways incase my store doesn't have coral sand?

What substrate are you using ? Do you have any ornaments that are non-aquatic ? or do you have large pieces of bogwood perhaps ?

No wood or anything in it at all. Just playsand on the bottom from homedepot which I added last Monday. The water itself :p filter, heater, and fish. I started keeping a water test log last Sunday, right before I added the sand. Though people told me sand wouldn't lower ph.
Heres the log just for anyone to see
day 1
ph 7
nitrite 0
amonia 0

day 2 4:30 p.m
ph 7.4
nitrite 0
ammonia 0

day 4 9:30 a.m.
ph 6.8
nitrie 0
ammonia .25

day 5 1030 am
ph 6.3
nitrite 0
ammonia 0

day 6 4pm (today)
ph 6.2
ammonia 0
nitrite 0

OK, next things to test for is kH - take a sample straight from the tap and the reading. Then let a tapwater sample stand for 24 hours then test again. Then also take a reading from your tank.

It "could" be that your water has very little buffer - and adding some bicarbonate of soda will help keep the pH stable - but don't do that until you know what your kH is.

Ack, can't test for my kh anytime soon. I only have $6 and that needs to feed me until Tues =\

Weird, I just tested my 10g which was fine all summer longer, it's ph has also dropped to 6.2 It has gravel, not sand.. Wtf is my ph dropping from =\

I suspect it might have something to do with your kH. API is a very good and also relatively cheap brand and shouldn't cost more than a few dollars - when you can afford it :)

I'm gonna check petland tomorrow to see if they have a KH test for really cheap. For now I put some baking soda in all my tanks. My one 10g which was always above 7.0 since the summer is now at 6.2... so something in my tap water must have changed. That tank is justa filter, light and gravel, no sand. I added enough baking soda to both tanks to get it at 7.0 and 7.1 How long will it stay at this from adding backing soda?
