Hi

Just started with my 240L tank with a sand base.

Wondered what people use to vacuum the inevitable bits of junk that accumulate on the sand surface. Don't want to end up hoovering all the sand up as well, just the junk.

Is there anything out there that's that precise, easy to use and cheap?

Cheers.

I actually use the very same gravel vacuum/siphon I use in my gravel tank - just instead of burying it in the sand like you would with the gravel, you kinda swirl it around about a half inch to an inch above the sand surface and the poo and debris suck right up. The sand compacts under the weight of the water and is not nearly as loose as you would think.

Standard gravel vac. I use the fat end to start the flow, then remove it underwater and just use the tube like the previous poster described.

Me too. I have a tube with suction bulb on one end-£3 from LFS. Things like bloodworms get sucked up while sand doesn't. Just get a little bit in the bucket which gets chucked back in with the clean water :)
