well as I want to get a group of ottos for my community the quarranteen tank that is clinicly clen needs to become full of algea to aid settling in and allow them to surrvive quaranteen.

Any ideas all i can think of is adding plant ferts to the water and lots of light

leave your lights on for 16 hours a day and if there are no fish in their, skip a water change so the algae can feed on the nitrates and reproduce

plant ferts will feed the algae, not cause it.

Lots of direct sunlight will grow the algae pretty fast, also add some rocks in there are it will spread all over them too. If you cant move the tank to direct sunlight, put some rocks in a bowl of water on a window sill (having said that sunlight is in short supply this time of year!!!)

About the only type algae otos will eat is the brown algae that is common to new tanks and green spot algae that forms on the glass both of which are diatoms. Leaving the tank lights on will probably result in blue-green algae which no fish will touch. One problem with quarantining otos is that they are delicate and need a mature tank. They are terribly susceptible to sudden deaths anyway.
