I apologise if this sounds like a silly question - but I was wondering, if I want to feed my fish some vegetables - say, zucchini - how exactly do I put it in? Do I clip it to something, dangle it on a bit of string or something like that? Or do I need to chop it into fish-bite size pieces and feed that way?

thanks :D

Most people blanch veg like zuchini/cucumber before feeding it to their fish, it softens it up and makes it easier for them to eat. You don't need to chop it up at all for consumption, but you don't have many fish so be careful not to overfeed them with it, attaching somthing heavy like pushing a small stone thorugh the slice of veg will help make it sink :) .

i have never tried to feed them zucchini, but i don't bother to blanche cucmber, i just wash it under tap water, chop it in half, exposing the most seeds (they tend to eat these first, as they are softest) and then weigh it down with an amazing invention james found on ebay called a screwcumber :D

but black angel let us in on her gelled food recipe last night, so i thought id pass it on to you!!

1 cup of lightly cooked veg.
You can use half a cup of peas
and half a cup of mixed veg, such as brocolli, spinach, green pepper, parsley, carrot.
If you use frozen veg then most are lightly boiled anyway.
1/2 a can of drained tuna or shrimps.

Liquify everything in a blender

in a pan dissolve 2 packets of unflavoured gelatin in half a cup of warm water, microwave it until its clear then add the veg mix.

Pour all that into a grease proof paper lined tin around 9x12" and then chill.

Once its set then you can cut into mouth sized pieces and take enough for a week and freeze the rest.

Once you get the hang of it you can add other ingredients such as cooked rice and fruit. Be creative.

i tried it out last night, and my fish loved it!!! :D

hope that helps!!

hi
i feed peas, zucchini, cucumber & romaine lettuce. with all of them i zap them in the microwave for a few secs or soak them in boiling water for a few mins first to soften. with the peas use frozen garden peas (not tinned too much salt) & once ive softened them i pop them out of the shells & mush them up & chuck them in. the other veg i have a clip on a suction cup that holds them in place on the side of the tank or as said wedge the veg under a rock or ornament etc! our fish love their veggies!!! ive seen potato in tanks at our lfs but havent tried that yet. :)

You can downsize the portions to fit with how many fish you have. Remember that most fish are omnivorous and need 1/3 of the diet to be protein and the rest veg but if you have fish such as angels/cichlids then you wont need so much of the veg side so you can add more in the way of protein with food such as bloodworm.

Only give this as a treat for tropicals and it can replace the flaked diet for goldfish which the amount given is intended for.

Thanks for the tips all, that recipe sounds really good, i am sure the fish will love it! Also much cheaper than buying the fancy foods from the lfs!

I gave my guys peas for the first time tonight, they totally loved it :)
