How To Do This?

My dad has a 120ltr tank with Malawi Cichlids - he wants to re-scape his tank and change the substraite. yet he has a few cichlids and quite a few juvis.

I suggested filling the bath with water the night before, adding dechlor, add a heater in to the bath so the water gets right then put the fish in there for a couple of hours until he has re-done his tank. Adding a few plants etc. so they can hide

We carnt use buckets as the water wouldnt stay warm enough for the few hours and they would kill each other.

Would the bath tatic work?'

We would scrub the bath clean to make sure there are no substance from the showergel etc in there.

Not sure on how the bath think would work but it is one idea.

When i moved house i bought large plastic tubs (they come in all different sizes) and used them to transport my cichlids at the time and my community tank. Just get a large one and pop your heaters suction cup onto the side of the plastic problem sorted.

Just syphon (sp??) the water from your tank straight into the tub as you will be needing to empty the tank to allow you to catch the fish and rescape etc. Saves you twice the amount of work. If you did that right before you moved the fish you would only have them in the bucket for a short period of time.

But some of them are agressive towards each other. and would end up killing each other. so If we have to get 2 plastic tubs - that means 2 heaters and we only have the one spare.

if you have used chemicals in the bath then i dont think you can, it can seriously harm the fishes =( but like you mentioned, you would have to give it a full clean

what are you going to be changing the substrate too?

So long as the bath is completely clean with no residue from as you say substances like shampoo etc, then I cant see it being a problem, use a bleach solution to clean it completley, 1pt bleach to 10pts water and make sure you rinse it thoroughly several times. The only issue from using clean water as opposed to using some tank water would be the ph difference, check both, if they are the same, so long as the temp is the same, you shouldnt have problem to net from tank and place directly in bath and vice versa once your finished.

You could of course do the change with the fish in the tank, shouldnt hurt them. Im always re-scaping and Ive changed substrates with the fish still in, just lower the water level sufficiently, use a net to get the gravel/sand up and then syphon off any remaining pieces that cant be caught in a net.

i do the same thing, infact it stops any fighting before they all become one big family

i say remove the substrate with them in the tank, if its sand you can siphon it straight out, i've removed gravel with fishes in the tank to put a UGF in
