i tend to have about an inch to and innch an a half think. in other parts of the tank maybe 2 and a bit inch

and some tanks have anything up to 4 inches. Personally, for the most part, I'm between 2 and 3 inches.

I have about three inches of black quartz. Some say it is better to have a gentle slant from the rear down to the front. This is meant to make the tank look better and make poo roll down to the front making it easier to vac.

If you plan to keep plants, then 3-4 inch substrate is necessary, so it gives the plants an easier time to root themselves

If you use a UGF, it's best to keep it from 1-2 inches, so there is enough flow for the water to flow through the substrate.

Otherwise, it's up to you how deep you want the substrate to cover.
