Hey all,

I recenty had to put 5 infected fish into a hospital tank. They all have fungus. However I have put the right medication in the water and the correct amount however, I am unsure how oftern I should change the water?

Should I change it every 2 days with the correct amount of medicine or do I only do it once a week like the regular tank?

Any advice would be great cheers,

Reesy :good:

Hi Reesy
They never tell you how long to leave the meds in do they? I've asked a similar question in the tropical discussion forum today.
Common sense tells me to leave the meds in a week and then do a water change like normal but I'm not 100% sure. Hope we get some more answers!

What medication are you using? With many, if not most meds, daily 50% water changes & remed, though there are a few that do need to remain in the water.

you should also monitor the ammonia levels in the quarantine tank. If they go up then do a water change. Most medications wipe out the filter bacteria and encourage ammonia problems. Ammonia problems can be prevented by using Ammogon or Zeolite to absorb the ammonia from the water.

Hi Tolak, I know this is not my thread but hopefully Reesy won't mind if I join in.
I'm using Interpet Swimbladder Treatment with the recommended added salt. Grateful for any meds knowledge you can give us.

To be honest I bought the medicine from a repitible dealer who assured me that this was the best they had (cost enough)

The instruction manual is pretty useless aswell. The only real instructions are on the side of the bottle that state....1 pipet for every 5 litres.

When I was a new aquarist I put wrong amount and this killed the fish instantly. However as my skills have grown I can say that its going well now.

The only issue I have is how oftern I do a water change.

Also When I first realise that the fish were infected and the disease is contagious I did a 50% water change on my tank. Is that correct or not realy needed?

Cheers,

Knowing the name of the med will determine what sort of water change schedule you will be on. A true fungal infection is rare, and is usually secondary to a bacterial problem. I'm guessing that you are from the UK, you will not be able to get antibiotics over the counter. Here is a list of vets that treat fish, you may want to give one of them a call. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=262299

Water changes certainly can't hurt, and are probably half of the solution for ill fish.

The problem with the Interpet line of meds is that it is near impossible finding out what exactly is in them. This makes referencing to commonly found pharmacological data near impossible.

Right i've found out that it is also interpet anti-fungus. I only have a 10 litre tank and my main tank seems to be infecting other fish so they've all had to be moved. grrr

However i do a 50% water change everyday. The fish seem to be ok with is so its all good.
