How Often To Do Regular Water Changes?

Hi Mandy82 :)

Don't worry about changing too much water, worry about not changing enough.

If you live in an area where there is a lot of nitrate in the tap water, you will have to change more water or do water changes more frequently to keep that in check.

Since you have fry, you will probably be feeding them more often than if you have all adult fish, so keeping the bottom free of uneaten food is important. Be sure to vacuum it well, and if this means changing more water than you would otherwise change, that's fine too.

Inch... i've always thought that changeing more than 30% of the water at any given time wasn't a very good idea because

A. You'll change the chemistry of the tank
B. You'll change the temp of the tank
C. 25% chlorine/chloramines water can be dealt with but more than that is very harmfull. This one's only really a concern if you don't use enough dechlor.

If the tank has been neglected, don't change more than 25% daily. In a tank with regular maintainance, and a water supply that matches the parameters of the tank, you can safely change large amounts. I change 50% to 80% weekly on most of my tanks, 50% daily on very young fry.
