How Often Do You Clean Your External Filter?

I bought a eheim 2217 off of ebay and was wondering how often i should disconect it to clean it? This is my first external filter so I havn,t a clue

When I had mine, i cleaned it every 2-3 weeks. I took all the media out and cleaned it in old tank water.

absolutely right.

cleaning your filter can do more harm than good sometimes, you should only do it when strictly nescessary so when you see that the flow is reduced from the filter then you should clean it. How often this happens depends on a lot of factors specific to your tank.

i run 2 filters and alternate them every 6 months so each filter gets done once a year.

just about to collect my new tank which is the same as yours , i also have a Eheim filter. Any problems i should know about? Good news on the cleaning front!!!!!

I've no idea how you figured it out though...I must have slipped up somewhere lol.

Now would you put the eheim media pack in, as these cost any where from £35 to £55 or would you use something else?
