How Much?

Im pretty sure there's a calculator out there somewhere that would tell me but I cant find it...
I want to put about 1.5'' to 2'' of sand in my tank. It's 36'' x 12''. would I just do 36x12x2 to get the correct measurement?....after that how would I convert it into a weight so I can buy the right amount?....math was never my strong point..

1 bag should do ,but if you get 2 bags and you have some left over ,rake it into your lawn.

yeah one bag, but only use a thin layer add more if required.

So a 12 lb bag would be big enough?

I figured it would take at least 20 lbs

You don't need 1.5-2", that takes up so much spare room. I've got barely an inch in a 3.5foot tank and used an average sized bag of playsand. Plants root in it fine.

I just don't want to not have enough sand. 'cause it takes 2 weeks to get here and I plan on rinsing the sand outside, but I can only rinse it outside for another 2 weeks, afterwards its to cold and the hose comes inside for the winter... I would rather order to much than to little... should I order a 5lb bag just in case I'm not satisfied or should I just leave a layer of gravel in the bottom to make it look fuller? I assume the roots would be fine with that too?
