and im thanking about adding about 12 more fish what kind mix with rosey reds?

what's the semi big fish?

your already fully stocked in a ten gallon. there's no way that you can add 12 more to a ten gallon!!

go by 1 inch of fish to every 1 US gallon of water

have a read of this...it reallllllllly useful!:

oh i have a Gouramis i thought it was called semi fish lol

and i dont thank it true about the 1 inch a gallon stuff because walmart and petmart have like 40 fish in a 20 gallon tank

yes and that's why you see dead fish/diseased fish in their tanks.

fish stores are only there to sell fish, they don't keep fish as a hobby so arent really that interested in the fishes living conditions for a short period of time.

your plan to keep 19 fish in a 10 gallon tank will make the fish stressed and their immune systems will suffer badly.

i am by no means anywhere near an expert on this stuff but if you listen to the experts on this forum it'll help you keep your tank a hell of a lot healthier than walmart's or petmart's!

also, walmart and petmart have developed a bad name for themselves in fishkeeping as their fish are poor quality and come with the added bonus of diseases!!

ohh ok nice to know this so that why all my fish die before 4 weeks

what are some good stores to buy fish at?

another point, advice from shops like walmart etc are usually pretty bad, always checkup here, ive learned that this forum is absolutely full of experts with unbelievable knowledge lol! and all of them are happy to help a beginner!

take a look at the pinned topics btw they are always a help!

can i ask have you fishless cycled your tank?

A fish's stomach is about the size of it's eyeball, count eyes & go from there. It's always better to underfeed than overfeed, fish in the wild live on the edge of starvation.

The inch per gallon guideline applies to the adult size of slim bodied fish that grow to no more than 3 inches. It's a good beginner's guideline, something that would be wise to follow in your situation.

The setup you find at Wal-Mart is a common setup for places selling fish. You are keeping, not selling fish, the tanks you see are not the complete setup. You don't see the large sump filtration units, heaters, and water change routine.

The problem with Wal-Mart is not one of equipment, it's one of getting poor stock from commercial breeders who only care about making a buck, and of hiring untrained employees & not offering any training in the proper maintenance & care of the fish & system. The best shops around have basically the same system, it's not rocket science. They also have competent employees, and a better, though more expensive, source of stock.

ummmmmmm lol i may sound dumb but what is fishless cycle and how you do it?

but i change my tank water every 6 weeks.
this how i do it

i put all the fish and their old water in a clean bucket then put there air pump in the bucket with them.
then i wash the tank with cold water and dry it off then clean their gravel out .
then i put the clean gravel back in the tank and change the filter .
then i fill the tank back up with clean water then i put some tetra aqua safe water conditioner in the water.
then i turn on the filter system and air pump and let it run for about 3 hours.
after 3 or 4 hours i take a net and put the fish one by one in the new water then they swim really really fast then they all keep still (goes into shock)for about a half of hour then about 2 or 3 of my fish die and the rest of them start to swim around.

is this a fishless cycle?

all i have in my tank is gravel, glass stones, filter system, air pump, a small house for them and a light hood.
what else do you thank i need for my tank?

Here's a link to fishless cycling; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861

I see a few problems with the way you do maintenance. Your filter media, and to some extent your gravel, hold your nitrifying bacteria. Your nitrifying bacteria convert the ammonia your fish produce as waste to nitrites, then nitrates. Ammonia is real toxic to fish, nitrite is a little less bad, nitrate is much less bad. By cleaning all the gravel, and changing the media, you are killing off the nitrifying bacteria.

There is no need to remove the fish to clean your tank. Get a gravel vac, it's nothing more than a length of hose attached to a larger plastic tube. This will siphon the debris out of the gravel, and remove some of the water. You should be doing this weekly, if not twice a week since your tank is overstocked.

You don't need to change the filter media unless it is totally falling apart. Swishing it in some old tank water will do for cleaning it. Don't use straight tap water, it contains chlorine, which will kill your nitrifying bacteria. I have filter sponges that are several years old in a few tanks, they are still holding up, no need to replace them. The instructions in the filter box are full of crap, they are in this to make money. Selling you media is a way to make money.

It sounds like your tank cycles after every round of maintenance. You should pick up a water test kit, one that tests for ammonia, nitrite, & nitrate. You need this for cycling.
