i would use about 2" or so. not to sure if there is a set rule for this sort of thing?

that theory is very much disputed, but i won't go into it now.

depends a bit on what fish and decor you're going for. if you have fish that like to burrow or intend to plant the tank fairly heavily then go for 2" or even more.

If not you can get away with 1" or so.

It;s only a rough idea anyway. Just keep putting it in until it looks how you want it!!!!
