I'm starting up a new 20 gallon high, how much sand should I get? I believe it comes in 5 & 20 pound bags..................

I'll be using real aquarium sand since nobody sells the playsand locally, at least I haven't found any yet.

i have always thought a good guide line for a tank would be around 2-3 inches deep but in reality you can have it as deep as you want,
dont really know how many bags you will need though!

Length of tank x width of tank x average desired substrate depth in cm = volume required in cm[sup]3[/sup]

volume required in cm[sup]3[/sup] * 0.0016 = Mass of sand required in Kg (providing standard sand)

How about in layman's terms? The tank footprint is 24x13 inches, which I believe is close to 48x26cm correct? I would like the sand to be about 2 or 3 inches deep, or 4 to 6cm.

How do I measure that in US pounds? The bags are available in 20 & 5 pound bags.

EDIT:

Just found a converter online.

13 inches equals 33 centimeters
24 inches equals 61 centimeters (60.96 to be exact)

Laymnn terms? We conform to System Internationale here ;)

(61*33*5/1000)*1.6= 16.1Kg (lets round) I think that's 35.5 pounds. That's with an average of 5cm, so obviously you'd slope from front to back.

do you have a home depot or lowes? Home depot has a nice play sand that we are going to try.

Thanks guys! I just bought a 50 pound bag of Quickrete Playsand from Lowe's on my way home from work. Just under 4 dollars including tax. Looks good to me........... :hyper:

I was going to suggest that but fish fanny beat me to it. I'm going to switch my 29 gallon to sand using play sand soon.

I'm probably going to get that 20 gallon tank tomorrow and I wanted to try a different look. I have a plan........... :shifty:

Lol. It'll be interesting to see it happening. Keep us updated.

50 pounds, that's 22.6796185 kilograms.
4 Dollars equals about 2.5 Pounds ;)

I probably won't need all of it but I'll keep some extra for topping it off. I plan to use some wood that I found in the creek at the edge of my yard that I've been soaking for about a month.

awesome. Will you let me know how that sand looks when you clean it? Your "I have a plan" statement was both scary and intriguing! haha Can't wait to see!

Yes, I'll post some pics in this thread.

Rats! The guy sold the tank I was going to buy.

It's my fault for not jumping on it sooner. It was a 20 gallon high with a Marineland Penguin 200 filter, hood & light for only $20..........now I'm back to looking around for another deal. :grr:
