How Much Sand?

Yeah, now I'm looking at a 20 gallon long that includes a hood, light & crappy filter for $35 on Craigslist..................

There's a lesson to be learned here kids, if you see a good deal you better jump on it!

Here's the 20 gallon long for $35 on Craigslist.org

I found this stand for it for an additional $20:

I actually got a better deal than you :p
Ps that stand in the first pic is the one my 10 gallon bowfront came with. The filter was crappy though too and so is the light but I'm getting a new heater because it was the stealth and may get a new filter but this one seems ok.

I hear a pound of sand per gallon, but I have successfully sanded my 75g and 55 gallon with a lot less. My 55g has about 40lbs, and my 75g about 60lbs, and both have about an inch of sand. It also depends on if you are going to plant it.

Hey, thanks for bumping my old thread!

I ended up getting a used 20 gallon tank that including nothing but the tank for $20 on Craigslist. I had an extra 20 gallon high stand, hood, light and a Top Fin 20 filter laying around doing nothing. I also added the Penguin 100 bio-wheel that came with my 10 gallon so now the tank has filtration good enough for 40 gallons.

I added the playsand & my misadventures with adding it are posted in another thread, but here's some current pictures of what it looks like right now:

I can't see your stocking but I pay quite a bit of attention to your threads because they're interesting and as I recall they're is 3 guppies 1 powder blue dwarf gourami and 6 glo-lite tetras. And are your fry in here or another tank?

I only have 5 Glowlights in that tank & the fry have been taken to PetCo already. I only kept 3 of them in the tank. I also added 3 Threelined/False Julii Corys & a Mystery Snail as a cleanup crew. :hyper: I also added the single Blue Tuxedo Guppy to the 3 that were in that tank. I love Guppies! They are very active, colorful and generally harmless to each other & everything else in the tank.

To be honest the activity, harmony & general vibe in that new tank is the best of all my tanks by far. There's always something going on & none of the fish hide or feel threatened. All inhabitants are well fed & everyone gets along.

Yeah thats like my tank I'm slowly moving a few fry over to my main tank. These guys will either stay here in the long run or will move into another tank but these are the chosen ones lol

Well it was a 50 pound bag & there's more than half of it left so I'd say about 20 pounds, maybe less if you consider all that washed away when I rinsed it. I like it so much that I'm trying to convince my son to switch his over from the river rock but he isn't interested.

I still have (2) 5 pound bags of Stoney River black sand that I used in my 36 gallon and I told him we could mix some regular with the black for a very natural look. He still isn't having it

I plan to do my 30 and my 8 gallon so I'll bet 50 lb should do. How many inches is the base?

The sand in my 20 gallon varies from 1-2.5 inches thick. They say you should keep the sand lower in the front of the tank so that most of the uneaten food & fish waste setlles there for easy cleaning. Good luck with the swict over. You'll have to post some pics of your progress.

I will I finally found my good camera (of course in my desk where I put it so it's kind of my fault) so I can take pics the whole time.

Ok I may get a 50 lb. For the 30 then mix wgatevers left with a 5 lb bag of black like you said and see what it's like in the 8 gallon....
