how much sand, plus how deep?

right so tomowrrow i'm going to get some sand in 25kg bags.

it needs to fill a 5x3ft tank and a 4x20" tank.

in the 4ft i'm doing a planting depth so will probable use just under 1 bag. On the 5ft'er i'm not too sure on how deep i should have it.

there's not going to be any serious plantingmainly as the fish in there would rip it apart!!.

If you aren't planting only go for a thin layer, about a cm deep, to cover the bottom.

Don't go over 1.5" and you should be fine. Anything deeper and without substrate movers might cause unwanted gas build ups.
