hi again all,

ok am getting their now re my new tank set up, external filter purchased, external heater purchased (internal heather purchased as back up in case need), air pump and air stones purchased, now i am looking at what gravel i should get and how much.

my new tank is going to be 39Wx17Hx12D" and collecting it in a couple of weeks.

i am wanting to have a really clean tank, nothing colourful so the gravel i was looking to get would be something like this:

http://www.fish-fish-fish.com/natural-aquarium-gravel-8kg-3-4mm.html?___store=default or http://www.fish-fish-fish.com/natural-aquarium-gravel-small-8kg.html

i have seen in a few peoples malawi cichlid tanks what looks like crushed coral which is white and nice but unsure what it is?

just looking for some help and options.

i do like the 3-4mm natural gravel but again just wondered how much i am going to need?

thanks

HI there

I used 22kgs of sand in my 200L tank which is 100cm which I believe equates to 39 inches. I don't know if weight for weight gravel and sand would give the same coverage though, if I recall when I started the tank off with gravel I used about 3 - 4 8kg bags (I can't remember exactly). Also, consider what kind of fish you are having, corys and other types of loaches are much happier in sand so if you are planning on having those do bear that in mind. Mine are so much happier since I changed to sand from gravel. :) Oh, re the crushed coral type sand, I think, but I may be wrong, that it can mess around with the pH of your water but I'm sure someone with more experience can confirm or deny that.
