hi my guppy tank has about 1 inch of gravel. i’m about to order more, but then i read a member’s thread that corys need sand. also i bought a new filter rated for 40+ gallon tank. and i have an additional small order. my question is why does my aquarium start to smell in about 10 days. do i need to do water changes more often? would deeper gravel help because when i clean the tank i stir up a lot of cloudy stuff.

Hi! Yes, Cories much better with sand! Is it 20 long or 20 high? Do you plan to plant the tank? How thick do you want the substrate to be?

About the smell, do you have carbon in your filter? This can sometimes help absorb the smell. Weekly water changes are recommended to help keep water parameters stable and consistent, I am sure it would help with the smell too!

Depends on how thick you want the substrate to be.

The odd smell is normal for new/cycling tanks. What does it smell like?
