Hi there. I have a large tank in a basement. The basement is usually around 65F (18c) and I suspect if I want a community tank my temp should be somewhere around 79F (26c). The problem is that my heaters may not be able to hold that temp at night in the winter and the tank could sway back and forth within a 2-degree range over a 24-hour period.

Is this ok? I can probably stabilize the temp by adding more heaters but I already have so much stuff in there and so many wires I would rather not... Besides, its hard enough to sync to heaters, much less three....

A degreee or two of fluctuation is fine, providing your heater is rated strong enough for your tank it should be fine. my personal view is where possible have 2 heaters, then they don't have to work as hard so are less likley to be strained and break, and if one does break you still have some heat source.

if you are concerned why not get a space heater in the basement to keep the ambient temp static. this is what i do in my fishshed.

Thanks to both. I already have 250w heaters in the tank today and will still likely have that fluctation.

The basement is huge - approximately 1,500sq feet (135 sq meters) so I dont think a space heater would work :)

One thing I haven't calculated is heat from my VHO lighting - which could help hold the temp if I ran the lighting a little later into the night. Maybe a 13 or 14 hour day? Hmmm
