I am currently cycling my tank. Once it is ready i plan on stocking it with Mollies, guppies and/or platies... I was wondering though, what the smallest number of each should be in a group? My tank isnt that big, so i was planning on just getting about 10 fish... so i was think either 5 Mollies and 5 Guppies, or 4 Mollies, 3 Guppies and 3 Platies... but i am not sure if the second one will make the groups too small :/

I am also planning on getting the same sex for each kind of fish. which is the best to get? Males or females?

Those 'shoal' sizes look fine to me in both cases as none of them are actually shoaling fish.

For guppies I would go for all male as they are so much more colourful. For the others all female. Not sure if any of those change sex though when they are in an all 1 sex group.

The fish you are investigating are not really shoaling fish. Any of them is quite happy to be the only one of its own species in a tank but, as is true of most fish, they will enjoy having some kind of company. For a single sex tank, select all males. If you select all females, you will soon find yourself with many more fish than you wanted.
