how many tetras can be kept in a 10 gallon, with possibly 2 or 3 corys or pygmy corys.

Depends on which species of tetra you want to keep. You want to stay as close to the one inch of fish (size when they are mature) to 1 gallon. So you could get away w/10-15 inches of fish. Just make sure you have good filtration, and stick to weekly water changes, as smaller tanks are more unstable than larger ones.

what type of filter do small tanks like that require?
Id always try to go with a small external or hob (hang on back) filter as internal ones take up valuable tank space that you just aint got.

With regard to stocking it does depend on your tetra choice. I wouldnt advice neons as theyre not that hardy. Personally I'd consider cardinals, glowlights or maybe lemons. See what others say though. All of these 3 tetras reach about 1.5" full size so you can get away with about 5 of these with 3 pygmaeus catfish when you first stock. Then maybe 2/3 more after 6months once your tank's matured.

If you are thinking about an external filter, have a look here.....................

Eden 501 on Ebay

It's good for upto 60Ltrs. I'm using on on my 40Ltr tanks and have no problems with it . It's small, easy to set up and also very quiet.

The only thing to be aware of is that the instructions say to place it on the same level as the tank, NOT below.
(I assume this is due to the size of the pump and the distance it would need to lift the water !)
If you can live with that restriction ........ It woks fine !

You could keep, a school of 7 neons and a school of 7 glowlights, or other small tetras.
