How Many More Fish Can I Have

the tank's 34 us gallons, you work out stocking on 1" of fish, per us gallon of water. it's not exact but it should give you a good enough idea.

BUM! This means I've worked my inch/gallon out incorrectly!

I know that I will have approx 0.26 inch of fish per litre when fully stocked. So, I originally multiplied that by 4.54L (the amount of water in a UK gallon) to give me 1.17 inch per gallon.

But if it's meant to be a US gallon I only need to multiply 0.26 by 3.78L (the amount of water in a US gallon) which gives me 0.98 inch per gallon.

Is this now correct? Any help for my number-numb brain is greatly appreciated!

The 1" per gallon guide is based on US gallons. Since a US gallon is more than a UK gallon, you could it comes out to 1.2" per UK gallon. For a 25 gallon(UK) tank for instance, that would be come out to 30" of fish and a 25 gallon(UK) tank is slightly over 30 gallon(US).

yup those figures look about right to me ben.

don't stress too much over it though, the " per gallon thing is a guideline not a set in stone rule. so long as your not bending it too much and the fish are happy it's fine!

UK gallons ARE larger than US gallons. The way I put it in the first post didn't come out as it should which was that there were more US gallons in a tank than UK gallons. Anyway, that's why you have to multiply be 1.2. Forget the litres. They're irrelevant. A UK gallon is equal to 1.20094992 US gallons (from onlineconversions.com which I had also used and have bookmarked). So if you multiply the number of UK gallons by 1.2, you get the equivalent number of US gallons which tells you how many inches you can have.

As I said in the example in the frst post:

25 UK gallons = 30 US gallons (from onlineconversions.com) = 30 inches of fish

Multiply 25 UK gallons by 1.2 = 30 US gallons = 30" of fish in a 25 gallon(UK) tank.
