Hi, I was wondering if the general rule of fish per gallon applies to deep tanks? My tank is a 25G 12"Dx24"Lx21"T. Currently I have the fish listed in my signature, I am wondering if I am overstocked or at my limit or what? Also, do frogs count as inches of fish? Do bottomfeeders such as my loaches? Do plants do anything to possible fish load?

Thanks

This is one of the reason why I don't like inches per gallon rule... ;)

Yes, the height does matter, because the biggest factor overall is the surface area of the water which meets the air. So in your case, unfortunately, the surface area will be smaller than the typical 25g with less height. But having looked at your stock level, I think you are going to be ok overall, except for the shark which requires larger tank. I would say you are ok if you remove the shark...

I have no idea about frogs though, and yes bottom feeders do count since they do prodoce waste just like other fishes. Plants will help since they will remove some of nitrates for you as well as consuming CO2 and produce O2 (during the day). Having plants can only benefit as long as you can keep them alive...

Alright thanks, I wasn't entirely sure if the inch/gallon rule was for surface area, or swimming area. With the shark, I figure that he will go back to the pet store if he grows up to be nasty, or I just won't replace a few other fish that are bound to dissapear as he grows up.
