Hi,

I've just joined the forum as i've recently got a new tank (hi all), I was just wonderng what a safe amount of fish to have in my tank would be wothout them all suffering. My tank size is 120cm(L) x 65cm(H) x 40cm(W). roughly 68 gallons. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it all depends on what type of fish

search out some fish you like, and then post to see if they are compatible with others you want

well, i bought the tank with fish you see. The people i bought it from were moving and did'nt have space in there new home. Anyway, it came with 3 clown loaches, 2 suckermouth catfish, 1 black mollie, 1 red-tailed black shark, 2 swordtails, and 8 other fish, not quite sure what they are yet, 2 of them look like tiger barbs maybe. Theres 3 of them which live on the bottom mainly but then suck the side of the tank every now and then, anyone know what they are, they are orange in colour and roughly 15-20cm long with mouths like suckers when they are on the side of the tank.

I'm looking at getting some more fish but don't want the fish to become distressed with overcrowding. I want a siamese fighting fish, a couple of angelfish, maybe 7 neon tetras and maybe 5 guppies. Is this wise.

clown loaches get to a foot+long. i would say the tank is pretty much full. as for the sucker fish...no idea, some kind of pleco?

the siamese fighter, angels and tetras arent a good idea, reasons:

tetras will nip the long fins of the fighter and angels
angels will nip the fins of the fighter
fighter might kill the tetras
fighter will attack bright coloured guppies

all in all...night mare to keep them together. i would leave out the tetras and either the fighter or the angels, angels get big.

if you have a 68g then you are by no means overstocked except for maybe on the bottom of the tank. however, i have 3 small clown loaches in my 75g comfortably but i know they will need a bigger tank eventually which is fine as they grow quite slowly and by the time i need to put them in a bigger tank, i will have a bigger tank :)

basically you have 1" of fish per gallon of water as a rule. this does not include their tails and when you work it out you work it out by how big they will be when full grown.

as for the shark, i dunno but i would take it to an lfs. someone else may think differently here

if you have only 2 tiger barbs i would take them back also. they are verrrrrry fin nippy especially if only kept in a pair. they are best kept with at least 7-8 of their own kind. i had 6 and even still they were awful to the other fish

hope this helps at all.

p.s. can you post some pics of the sucker things that you dont know what they are??? what colour are they? can you describe anything else about them?
