How Many Fish?

I've only got a diddy tank at the moment but i've bought a bigger 2'x1' that i'm going to set up to give my fish more space. at the moment i have 5 tetra's and a plec. I've recently lost a gourami and 2 madagascar rainbow fish. Can i replace them without over stocking my new tank? how many fish could i keep in the new tank? i know it depends on the breed of fish and that the plec will grow quite large, just wondered if someone could give me a rough number?

How many gallons is the tank how long has it been set up now?
How many fish the tank can hold depends mostly on how big they'll get, how active they are, what their social/environment/habitat requirements are, what fish they are compatable with and how much waste they produce roughly etc.
So its better to find a type/species of fish you like and then work out how suitable they are from there, its really too vague a question otherwise if you have no idea on what sort of fish that interest you.
