Hi

I have just under a 60lt tank and was just wondering how many fish it will hold? I currently have:

3 angel fish
8 mollies
3 black skirts

Is that my lot or can I add a few more?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

That is more than enough for a small tank. You are probably going to have to move some of them out as they grow. The angelfish will get too big for the tank and the black skirt (black widow) tetras are fin nippers that might bite the angel's fins. Possibly look at returning the black widow tetras or the angelfish so there isn't issues with them.

If the mollies breed you could end up with dozens of baby fish that will need a home too.

Has the tank been set up for long?
If not then only feed the fish once every couple of days and do a 75% water change & gravel clean the substrate about 4 hours after feeding them. And do a 75% water change & gravel clean the substrate if you have any ammonia or nitrite readings above 0.

Try to invest in a liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate & pH if you don't have one. Check the expiry date before you buy it and keep the kit cool and dry.

We also need to know the water parameters, being the GH (general or total hardness) and pH. Mollies must have relatively hard water or they will not last long.

Your mollies are doomed anyway, as this tank (60 liters or 15 gallons) is not large enough for one, let alone eight. They will grow (or will if they survive and are healthy) to 4-5 inches, and they have a fair impact on water quality because they are primarily vegetarian.

As Colin said, the angelfish musty be moved out too. And the tetras need a lareger group if you keep them, butthis tank is not sufficient space for them either.

I know these fish probably seem small now, but fish grow continually, and when they are in the confines of a tank the water quality is impacted and they do not develop properly, even though nothing appears externally. They must have larger tanks.

Depending on the water conditions Black Widow tetras are the only fish that may be suited to that tank, the Angels and Mollies must go.

Agree...that tank is way too small for even one angel. I have a 24 inch tall fully planted 132 liter hex shaped tank (35 gallon). In it I have one angel, 5 black skirt tetras, one BN Pleco and 10 serpae tetra. My angel grew to the size of large fist..about 6 inches high. My angel will very occasionally dart at the larger skirt tetra but otherwise all the fish get along fine. I do 60% water changes weekly and am overfiltered.

The black skirt tetras may be fine in your tank...maybe even add one more and then maybe get six or eight small tetra..perhaps lampeye tetra or other small tetra. But the angel needs to be rehomed as it grows fast and large and needs a tall tank. Angels also are know to fight among themselves if all males. The mollies should be rehomed.

But before adding any more fish, as stated by others here, you need to be sure your tank is fully cycled, otherwise you could have problems.

You might want to add some smaller type plants such as anubias nana to help absorb nitrates. Fish appreciate a planted aquarium.

The site seriouslyfish.com is a great place to research fish and their requirements.

I think you may have missed the size of this tank...60 liters (15 gallons). This is not suitable for a group of Black Skirt Tetras, alone.

perhaps it is borderline for black skirt tetra...they get to be about 3 inches...

maybe just go for just a school of smaller tetras like the lampeyed tetra I recommended..or serpae tetras also look nice ....perhaps 8 or so in your fairly small tank with some snails

Well, unfortunately, you are already very overstocked. Sorry to say. None of the fish you are keeping, are compatible with that size of a tank. If you can rehome or return them, that would be ideal.

Angelfish need way more room. For a trio I wouldn’t put them in anything smaller than a 55 gallon (208 liters) that is maybe even pushing it a bit. 60 liters is just over 15 gallons.

Blackskirt tetras also need at least 20 gallons, but it is all about the footprint of the tank. They need a tank that is at least 24” (60cm) x 15” (37,5cm). They are also schooling fish so need to be kept in groups of 6 or more. They do better with more fish, they can be a bit nippy.

You have sooo many Mollies, and their minimum tank requirements are that they need at least a 40 gallon breeder for swimming length. They are large waste producers and really need the additional water volume.
