hi ive got a 20 UKgal tank and i want to know how many fish i can get in it if they are small fish like tetras or dwarf fish, can anyone give me ideas?

The commonly told US standard is one inch of fish per gallon... so that would put your around 75 cm of fish(?) Double check my conversions though... I rounded 20 UK Gal to 25 US Gal and I think there are about 3 cm per inch...

Also it's worth noting that this 'rule of thumb' is regarding smaller community fish, not large cichlids (10G is no where's near enough space for a 10 inch Oscar...).

mY tanks about that size, and I'm planning on...
2 honey gouramis
6 neons (although may ommit if I can't get homes for the cories I'm breeding)
4 f/m bettas
3 bronze cories (but more will be on th way once breedings started)

You'll want it less stocked than that I'd imagine, this is wil good filtration and frequent water changes.

The other thing i'd like to add is in some senses a tanks max stocking level varys at its different stages of maturity; A new tank that is still cycling will not be able to hold many fish at all and so does a tank that has only just finished cycling; your tank may be able to, say fit 20 platys in it, but that doesn't mean the filters will be able to handle them.
Also the other thing i'd check is that 1inch rule thing only applys to adult fish; many lfs's only sell very young fish that are not fully grown so remember to research their max size; also remember not to add too many fish too quickly to a tank.
